Mayor’s Parade 2011

Saturday the 11th of July

Over 50 groups took part in the 2011 Barnsley Mayor’s Parade and for the first time in 13 years, at the request of the town’s Mayor, Cllr Karen Dyson, vehicles and judging returned.

Starting from the County Way car park the parade made it’s way along Regent Street, Eldon Street, Mayday Green, Cheapside, New Street, Wellington Street, Peel Square, Market Hill, Church Street, turning back on to Regent Street and finishing at the lower County Way car park.

This podcast is a short audio guide to some of the many organisations who took part in the Parade.  It features The Chronicle Brass Band, The Antz Band, Barnsley Sea Cadets, The Junk Band, Two blokes in a pedalo (still not sure what they were doing in the show), Experience Barnsley and the town’s Samba Band.

Float Results
The (substance misuse) Recovery Coalition team won the Best Float in the Parade Award which was sponsored by Holiday Inn.

Best Walking Group Award sponsored by Walkabout, Barnsley was won by  The 33rd Salem Rainbows

And there was two winners in the Outstanding Contribution to the Parade. Barnsley YMCA and Barnsley Council Out of Hours Learning sharing the award which was sponsored by Vitesse, Barnsley. .

Cllr Dyson said: “Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who took part in the parade and came to watch it take place. There was a real sense of community and I felt proud to be Barnsley’s first citizen – we really know how to put on a good show!”

The Sound Of The Town

We sometimes hear, but how often to we listen, I mean really listen to what’s going on around us.

In this podcast you’ll hear what happen on Market Day in Barnsley at about 10am on Wednesday the 20th of April 2011.

The recording is unedited.

In 16 minutes and 17 seconds we travel from The Mall Shopping Centre, through Cheapside to the Open Market, into the Semi, back to Mayday Green, past the front of the Civic & Parkway Cinema towards the Courthouse car park and then home.

You’ll hear Barnsley’s bagpipe man, the nanan who’ll “No Way” get in a lift with her grandson and a debate about if Wednesday is the best day to ask people if they’ll be shopping in town on Friday the 29th, the day of the Royal Wedding.

“Revealed” The Exhibition.

Welcome to the latest podcast from mybarnsleychannel.com.  In this edition we visit Barnsley’s Cooper Art Gallery on Church Street to explore the “Revealed” exhibition.

If you’ve ever wondered how and why the Cooper Gallery became part of Barnsley history then this podcast goes some of the way to answer your questions.

With over four hundred paintings in the collection , the Revealed project used a number of them to tell the story of the gallery and also as a catalyse to inspire new works by local artists, as well as students from Barnsley CollegeJoseph Locke Primary School and Barnsley Young Writers Group.

Guiding us around the exhibition is Jemma Conway.

Barnsley History Day 2011

This is the first podcast from mybarnsleychannel.com and where better to start than at Barnsley’s History Day, which took place at the The Civic on Saturday the 8th of January 2011.

In this edition we talk to Barnsley’s Archive and Local Studies Manager Paul Sebbing, who reveals details about the oldest record in the towns archive collection.

2011 sees the 150th anniversary of the opening of Barnsley Cemetery. Martin Puk from the Friends from the Cemetery group talks about some of the work they do to protect the grounds and graves.

“People & Mining” are a local history group with a coal mining interest. Barry Moore explains about the work they do in local schools and as work is about to begin on The Barnsley Experience, Dr John Tanner, Project Manager for Barnsley Museum reveals more about the plans for the Town Hall.

Little Voice at The Lamproom

Rehearsals are about to get underway for the latest production by Barnsleys Lamproom Theatre Company.

Already this years Spring season has seen sell out audiences for Blackadder goes Forth, the TV series adapted for the stage.

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice by Jim Cartwright runs from the 24th of May until 29th 2010 at the Lamproom Theatre on Westgate.

The play follows much of the story from the 1998 film which starred Jane Horrocks, Michael Caine, Ewan McGregor Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn who received an academy award nomination for her performance as best supporting actress.

Auditions took place on Tuesday the 9th of March and to see how the night went for Director Phil Shepherd all you need to do is press play.

Locke Park Bonfire 2009

Organized every year by Barnsley Round Table, the Locke Park Bonfire has become a regular highlight on the town’s calendar. The night is great value for money plus it raises loads of money for local charities. So if you couldn’t make it on the night here is a bit of what you missed.
